Ricoh Announces TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing, Delivering Short-Run Book Production Automation at Graph Expo 2012

Optimizes production of ultra short-run books and manuals while maximizing automation and control

CHICAGO (Graph Expo - Booth #2600) – October 8, 2012
Ricoh Production Print Solutions LLC (Ricoh), a leading provider of digital output solutions, today announced its TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing workflow solution offering for ultra-short book runs at Graph Expo 2012, held October 7-10 in Chicago. At the show, Ricoh is demonstrating the company’s newest solution, which enables book manufacturers to improve profitability and expand their capabilities on short runs with efficient, comprehensive management of the production process from start to finish. TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing uses Ricoh’s award-winning Ricoh ProcessDirector to maximize tracking capabilities, so that book production is optimized, consistent and error-free. The flexibility of the solution allows it to integrate with a wide variety of digital output technologies, including the InfoPrint 5000.

At Graph Expo, attendees will see the effectiveness of the single system workflow solution for ultra-short run book production, allowing book publishers and production facilities to:

  • Streamline workflow and onboard work quickly, with a flexible workflow that creates batches based on job characteristics and moves them through imposition, printing and binding.
  • Monitoring of each title with automated workflow tracking, which controls each element of the print production process, from order receipt to job completion, via a centralized web interface. Users can also add barcodes or other unique identifiers to book elements in order to track the production process from end-to-end.
  • Meet business commitments and deadlines with complete output integrity that optimizes production by batching or ganging jobs with similar characteristics, such as paper stocks, imposition layouts, binding and other requirements. TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing also supports automated reprints of missing or damaged books or elements of the book.

“We continue to see the industry shifting to an on-demand publishing model – with traditional publishers and the burgeoning advent of commercial self-publishing – both of which increasingly require short runs,” said Jim Lichtenberg, founder and president, Lightspeed, LLC. “However, without the necessary efficiency provided by innovative digital products, it is impossible for publishers and manufacturers to create a sustainable and profitable business model. Automation, workflow improvements and new standards are essential to laying the foundation for sustainability and scalability in a rapidly-changing industry. As a company that is in touch with publishing trends and a leader in the rapid evolution of print capabilities, Ricoh offers publishers and manufacturers impressive new solutions to address these needs.”

“Whether printing one book or a million, today’s businesses need robust workflow solutions that allow them to have full control of the production process – and maximize efficiency along the way,” said Rich Lloyd, global offset to digital offerings manager, Ricoh. “With TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing, Ricoh is cementing its role as a partner in innovation by offering our customers a solution to effectively produce the output of a burgeoning industry trend – short and ultra-short run books.”

“In the next wave of book publishing, competitiveness is driving profitability. Companies lacking the proper tools are at a disadvantage when it comes to on-demand printing,” said Joanne David, president and CEO, Ultimate Technographics Inc. “TotalFlow Cadence for Publishing uses Ultimate Impostrip to offer powerful imposition integration that unites all the files for a job into a single, easily-manageable PDF file – a must for publishers with digital PDF workflows.”
